Drawing/doodling

I noticed last week that as long as I have a subject in mind, such as drawing from a real object or drawing from a photo, my drawings can turn out fairly well, and I am usually pleased with the result. When I am seeking an idea or more or less aimlessly sketching or doodling (which ever you want to call it) I seem to revert to the subjects and style I did as a teenager, and believe me it has been a long long time since I was a teenager. Those results don’t please me at all. I have a feeling I just need to spend more time doing focused drawings, either of objects or from photos. Perhaps with more training my part I will see more improvement in the quality of these sketches and won’t continue to feel that I gotten stuck in a time warp.

Anyone else find the same thing?

I have updated my blog with some more finished drawings so you can compare if you wish.

I’ve been through 3 of the 4 drawings. This is one of them.
Had a few issues with spacing and distances that I left myself notes about but on the whole I’m pleased.

Nature Studies and other

Been a couple of weeks since I posted anything here, but I have been drawing. Above is some of the sketches I did of chipmunks. Cute little guys aren’t they. I also did some house plant studies. But last week I sort of fell off of my “Study” wagon and just did some sketching from magazine photos. I have posted those drawings to my blog if you want to take a look. Like many others I got a bit distracted with my drawing last week and didn’t do as much as I would have liked. Oh well hope to do better this week.

Hope everyone is having a good June so far, ours is coolish and damp. I don’t mind the cool but would enjoy more sun.

Like everyone else, I’ve been too busy to do much with this, but I HOPE I’m now ready to concentrate on it better. Here are my efforts so far. Gag! I’m actually even older than the self-portrait, but I had a hard time adding enough wrinkles and bags to make it look like me. A clear triumph of vanity over realism. My father NEVER looked like the memory portrait, although he did wear wire-rim glasses and parted his hair in the middle back when he was young. The hand isn’t too bad, although I seem to have managed to omit the veins and liver spots–and plan to continue to do that. The last one speaks for itself. I’ve a ways to go. Now that I’ve figured out how to post directly to this blog, I hope more of you will do the same and let us all see what you’re drawing these days.

More Animal Dwgs

I updated my blog with more animal sketches this weekend. The animal last week for me was dogs. I also did some exercises from Chapter 4 in “Nature Drawing, A tool for Learning” Dogs are a challenge to draw, and I need to work on that some more. That said I am going to do chipmunks this week, I think they are cute, and hopefully my practice with squirrels will help with them. Now I just need to go get some images to sketch.

I am curious to see what others are doing. I will sometimes offer critiques and suggestions but I promise to be gentle, and I expect others will do the same for my drawings. After all we are here to share and learn. I know I need the motivation to keep trying to develop my skills.

Exercise 4 & a Trip to the Symphony

I’ve posted my line drawing attempts on my blog here.
Last night at the symphony, I tried drawing the cellos and basses as I was sitting close to them. This was the results
Kathy, I was able to borrow the nature book you are using from my library. It looks very interesting. It will probably go back to be borrowed another time though. Finding other interesting books is what gets me side tracked from finishing this one.

The second site is one for Rembrandt, a question was ask on the QuiltArt list who is your favorite artist, mine right now is Rembrandt. He did a huge amount of drawing and sketching, you can see some of his work here

Looking at other artists works and how they draw can also be part of the learning experience.
